A pregame ceremony honored all those that perished on 9/11 and wars that followed

The Hornell Red Raiders improved to 2-0 with a 41-0 victory over the Wellsville Lions on a night that was as much about remembrance as it was about football.
The Red Raiders wore their 9/11 tribute jerseys on the 25th anniversary of the attacks. First responders and service members were recognized, and the family of Zach Smith served as honorary captains for the coin toss.
Smith’s No. 56 jersey sat at midfield. Hornell scored on its first drive and never looked back, reaching the end zone seven times. The Raiders piled up 366 yards of total offense and established the passing game, while the defense held Wellsville to 79 yards and produced Hornell’s first shutout of the season.
“Today was a special night here in the Maple City—a night all about service, about saluting those who are willing to sacrifice their lives, their time, their energy to help those in need, from our service members in the military to our first responders,” Coach Mehr said.
“Twenty-five years ago this country changed. The world changed. Many of these kids don’t know what took place. My players have no idea. But the rest of us came together in the most difficult and darkest times we have faced as a nation. It was a great night—not because of the football game, but because football was able to bring the community together as it used to, and has in the past. It was a community that stood up to recognize and honor those who serve, to take pause for those who lost their lives, and then to recognize our brother, number 56, Zach Smith.”
Mehr said the team’s goals were to get better, limit mistakes, and cut down on penalties. “We achieved many of them,” he said. “We were pleased with that result, but more so pleased that we brought our beautiful community together for a night of remembrance and honor—and we were able to play a football game to cheer on all those who serve.” Brenton Booth had a strong night at quarterback, and the offensive line again established itself and dominated up front. Defensively, Mehr singled out Quentin Evingham and Keegan Matt, and noted that younger players also got meaningful snaps. “All in all, it was a good night as a coach to see multiple players get the opportunity to have an impact,” Mehr said.
In closing Coach Mehr added, “I have to recognize and acknowledge the coaching staff—offense, defense, special teams, and behind the scenes. Our coaches work day and night to prepare, and it was a great night for them to see the fruits of their labor.”
Hornell travels to LeRoy-Cal-Mum next week at 7 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 after LeRoy beat Haverling 19-12.
