Three performances of “84 Charing Cross Road”

This weekend, the Palmer Opera House in Cuba, NY is proud to be presenting the play 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and James Roose-Evans.
84 Charing Cross Road is set in 2 locations: an antiquarian bookshop in London called Marks & Company and the apartment of a writer in New York City. It begins in 1949 and concludes in 1971. The show is based on a true story.
The writer in NYC, Helene Hanff, has a passion for old books and begins corresponding with the bookshop to purchase books from them. As she acquires more books over time, she develops a friendship with the people working in the bookshop, primarily its manager, Frank Doel.
It is a heartwarming story of that friendship and their mutual love of books.
The entire show is told solely through letters. They–the store employees and the writer–never actually interact directly with each other in real time. It is a unique structure for the play and yet shows their growing friendship in a very real way. Audiences are sure to fall in love with the characters as they watch them going through their day-to-day lives.
