After an exciting run by the Wellsville Little League 12u All-Stars to capture a district title, the next level of Little League baseball is wrapping up an exciting summer.
The Junior League (ages 12-14) and Senior League (ages 14-16) are under the Little League umbrella and play on the varsity baseball diamond.
On Monday night, the Senior league team wrapped up a successful summer campaign. The team defeated District 2 foes Fillmore and Portville and Randolph out of District 38.
Next up it was a best-of-two series with Hornell for the championship between the teams from District 2 and District 6.
Last week, the team tied in North Hornell setting up Monday’s contest. Wellsville came from behind and won, 10-3.
Tonight, the Wellsville Junior League team hosts Portville at 5 p.m. and Fillmore at 7 p.m.
SENIOR LEAGUE
Wellsville 10, Hornell 3
Wellsville trailed 1-0 early but took a 2-1 lead in the fourth thanks to Ben Helveston and Claytin Loucks getting hits and scoring and RBI’s from Alton Simmons and Noah Salmonson.
Paul Giovanniello (five innings, eight strikeouts) got the win and Hudson “Huddy” Hoffman got the save for Wellsville.
The big blow came in the fifth inning when Kaiden Taylor just missed a grand slam with a 3-RBI triple to give Wellsville a 5-1 lead. Hoffman, Giovanniello and Helveston (RBI) all had hits and scored. Brayden Geffers also had a RBI double for Wellsville.
Dean Rhodes, Nate Wagoner, S.J. Wade (RBI) and Cal Turner all reached base as well.
