It was another stirring Memorial Day in Wellsville.

Michael Hennessy, who served almost 15 years as the director of veteran services, read the names of all of those from Allegany County who died in the line of duty during wars.

“They have become the foundation of our society. Every name that Mr. Hennessy read shows the devotion that this community has to also uphold those freedom,” said Wellsville Mayor Ed Fahs. “And let us all strive daily to prove that we are worthy of the freedoms that they have given to us, by showing that we too, can love our neighbors.”

Members of the service clubs lay wreaths, students from Wellsville plays Taps and there was a 21-gun salute. After the parade on Main Street there were ceremonies at local cemeteries.

“To our Gold Star families, thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. To all those who have served and no longer with us, today we remember them and honor them,” said Wellsville Town Supervisor Shad Alsworth.” There are many of you among us have served and are still with us … you are the best of our community. For those who are still serving, may the entire community wrap their arms around them, support their families and show, what it is, to be from Wellsville.”
