“When families can meet their basic needs and pursue opportunity, all of us benefit”
From Allegany County ACCORD Executive Director Leslie Gooch-Christman,
Community Action was created in 1964 as part of the War on Poverty, but today it is much more than that. Agencies like ACCORD are designed to understand and respond to the unique strengths and needs of our local communities.
ACCORD’s impact extends far beyond those living in poverty. If you’ve ever known someone who needed safe shelter from abuse, struggled to afford food or medication, needed child care, wanted to start a small business, or faced the loss of a job or home—then Community Action has been there for you.
Strong communities depend on neighbors who are safe, stable, and supported. When families can meet their basic needs and pursue opportunity, all of us benefit.
If you’ve been fortunate not to need these services, we invite you to be part of the solution—through volunteering, supporting our work, or simply learning more.
As ACCORD celebrates Community Action Month this May, we are grateful for our dedicated staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, and for you—our community.
Lesley Gooch-Christman
Executive Director, ACCORD
