Wellsville volleyball upsets Holley in sectionals; Bolivar-Richburg, Cuba-Rushford, Hinsdale all advance

PERRY — The Wellsville girls’ volleyball team upset higher seed Holley, 3-0 by the scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15 in the Section V Class C1 sectionals on Wednesday night in Perry.

With the win, #10 Wellsville (6-10) will advance to take on #2 Avon (10-7) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Avon. Holly finishes at 8-11.

“We went through a tough part of the schedule where we lost four in a row, 3-0, including a 3-0 loss to Avon nine days ago,” said Wellsville coach John Anderson. “But we kept working on new defensive adjustments, our setters were more comfortable and overall, the play increased.

“After our last loss we talked about winning on Senior Night, winning the tournament in Addison and winning our first sectional game,” Anderson continued. ‘The focus and intensity in practice and the games resulted in a run of victories in all of them.”

Wellsville senior Brynn Hallock had a team-high six kills with four digs, two blocks, four assists and two aces while senior Teagan Burke had five kills, six digs, five service points and an ace.

In the third and deciding set, senior libero Willow Everett served the last four points of the game including the last two on aces. She had six digs as well. Senior Mia Wyant had nine service points and six assists, freshman Alexa Dunbar had three kills, two digs and a block, sophomore Hannah Bennett had two kills, two digs and a block and junior Hailey Cowburn had a team-high nine points serving, two aces, two kills and a block.

Wellsville junior Lexis Coleman had five service points, two aces and three digs and sophomore Layla Bond had three kills, two kills and and ace. 

Class D1

Bolivar-Richburg 3, Keshequa 1

Bolivar-Richburg (13-6) won at home to open sectionals by defeated Keshequa, 25-18, 22-25, 25-8, 25-23.

Jayna Thomas led B-R with 14 kills, 10 aces and five digs. Delaney Loucks had 10 digs and served five aces while Danika Loucks had seven kills, five aces and five digs. Setter Addison Amidon handed out 24 assists and served two aces.

Bolivar-Richuirg is at #1 York (16-1) on Friday night at 6 p.m.

Class D1

Cuba-Rushford 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0

Cuba-Rushford came in as the #4 seed in a loaded Class D1 bracket. They knocked off GV/B, 25-12, 25-12, 25-11 in the first round of sectionals.

For C-R (15-4), Kendall Tompkins had another solid game with 16 assists, four aces, four kills and four digs. Kate Radomski had five kills (three aces) and Jordyn Radomski had six kills (three aces, eight digs)

Cuba-Rushford will host #5 Pavilion (10-9) on Friday at 6 p.m.

Class D2

Hinsdale 3, Honeoye 1

Like Wellsville, Hinsdale has had a tough schedule, but it paid off opening sectionals with a 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 26-24 win over higher seed Honeoye.

Charlee Briggs had a team-high six kills to go with a black and Lily Bushnell had four aces, one block, four kills and a dig for Hinsdale (5-14). Karissa Keller added nine aces serving, had a block and two kills.

Hinsdale is at #1 Avoca-Prattsburgh (11-5-1) on Friday at 6 p.m.
