OP-ED: Just Wondering in Wellsville

Tax caps, pay raises, infrastructure, and other things that make you wonder

An OPINION by Dennis Shutt, Wellsville

A recent read on the Sun that reported on the Allegany County Legislature’s agenda was one of the funniest reads I have viewed in a while.  Not that it was meant to be, but it made me smile.   They will decide if the cap of 2% increase on property taxes should be raised.  They also are voting on pay raises for some county department heads.

In the same article, the legislatures are blaming the state for mandate increases that are being dumped on the counties to pay. All of these are true.

The part I find humorous is that the people that are deciding what to do about these issues, are the same people that voted themselves a midterm raise.  The federal and state governments did not lay that cost increase on them.  They just wanted more money to do the job they were elected to do.  Note, I have written before that I do not mind the raise, I mind the number of legislators we have. They are now the highest paid, per capita, of our surrounding counties.  I know when I have to tighten my financial belt, I surely don’t spend more, when I know higher bills are coming.

Do they really think, that with all the election signs around our county, we should vote for them?  Just wondering.

Travel up Niles Hill lately?  It is super nice.  Wide enough to meet trucks and not have to drive off the road. Question I have is the three (3) different spots that have water seeping to the surface.  Could be fun this winter when it turns to ice or creates holes.    Just wondering.

How is the new town building coming?  Is it really big enough to house all the town business?  Just wondering.

Is there still an honest truth without manipulation?   Just wondering.

Does discipline really work without first having respect?  Just wondering.

Often drive by county schools and the first thing you see are the new clothing styles.  Next thing you ask yourself is if they have a school dress code.    Just wondering

Do you remember when you could call the Daily Reporter and Hoppy, Oak Duke, John Anderson, Neil Simon,  Kathryn Ross , George Fillgrove, and many more writers would get questioning minds, all the answers they wanted?  Just wondering.

If any of this makes you mad, smile, think or have any emotion at all, you could be as old as I am.

I’m just wondering.
