Safely charging phones, tools, and other lithium batteries in the home
Fire Prevention Week is October 5 – 11
From Allegany County,
WHEREAS, fire safety is a critical concern for the residents of Allegany County and proactive measures are necessary to safeguard lives, homes, and property; and
WHEREAS, the use of lithium batteries has become increasingly common in everyday life, powering cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and countless household devices; and
WHEREAS, while lithium batteries provide convenience and innovation, they also pose potential fire hazards if not charged, stored, or disposed of properly; and
WHEREAS, the 2025 Fire Prevention theme, “Charge Into Safety: Lithium Batteries in the Home,” highlights the importance of educating the public on safe practices to reduce the risk of battery-related fires; and
WHEREAS, residents are encouraged to follow safety guidelines such as:
- Only using manufacturer-approved chargers and batteries,
- Never charging batteries under pillows, on beds, or near combustible materials,
- Storing batteries at room temperature and away from direct sunlight,
- Recycling damaged or expired batteries at approved collection sites, and
- Calling 911 immediately if a battery overheats, smokes, or catches fire; and
WHEREAS, the County of Allegany joins with fire departments, emergency responders, schools, and community organizations in urging all residents to make fire prevention a priority in their homes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, W. Brooke Harris, Chairman of Allegany County Board of Legislators, do hereby proclaim October 5 through October 11, 2025, as “Fire Prevention Week” in Allegany County and call upon all citizens to “Charge Into Safety” by practicing and promoting lithium battery fire safety at home.
