Members of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office were made aware of a child abduction and kidnapping that occurred in the Town of Fulton, Oswego County, NY. The suspect and the victims were observed in the Allegany County area, possibly travelling westbound on Interstate 86 near the county line in Steuben County. Deputy Akins and Sergeant Weaver positioned themselves in an area in the Town of Amity where they could observe traffic on I-86. Deputy Akins and Sgt. Weaver observed the suspect vehicle traveling westbound and pulled out behind the vehicle. The vehicle exited I86 at Exit 33 turning southbound on St. Rt. 19. Deputies initiated a felony traffic stop with the assistance of the New York State Police. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. The victims were also taken into protective custody. The suspect was turned over to the custody of law enforcement in Oswego County by the NYSP. I want to commend Deputy Akins, Sergeant Weaver and members of the New York State Police for their actions that potentially saved the lives of the victims.

Sergeant Dale Thomas of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Economy Inn Motel located on State Route 244 in the Town of Alfred for a welfare check. During his investigation, he located the subject deceased in his room with multiple stab wounds. Sgt. Thomas secured the scene and awaited assistance from the New York State Police UF/BCI and the Alfred Police Department.
As a result of the investigation, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation out of SP Amity arrested Briar A. York, 27, of Alfred, NY for Murder 2nd degree (A-1 Felony) and Tampering with Physical Evidence (E Felony).
York was transported to SP Amity for processing. He was then transported to the Allegany County Jail for CAP arraignment where he was later remanded to the jail without bail.
This investigation showcases the importance of the cooperative effort between law enforcement agencies. From the initial discovery of the victim, to the arrest of the suspect, was only a matter of hours. This would not have been possible without the efforts of Sgt. Thomas, members of the ACSO, the Alfred Police Department and the members of the New York State Police BCI/UF. A job well done by all agencies involved.
