Wellsville’s Premier Dance School Sponsors The Wellsville Sun

In case you haven’t noticed, the arts are very important to this site. When Kate Martelle asked to become a sponsor of the site it was a major honor. The Martelle Dance Academy is a fairly new business on Main Street Wellsville, founded in 2019 and currently brightening up our business district at 178 North Main, next to The Beef Haus. In the two years the academy has been open, Martelle has made a big impression, during a pandemic.

The most impressive thing about the Martelle Dance Academy is Martelle herself. Kate comes from a well known Wellsville family that have a reputation for serving the community. You have to read this resume from her website:

“Kate has a Bachelors degree from SUNY Fredonia’s Dept of Theatre and Dance and over 20 years experience performing and teaching. She has also trained with the world renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company. Kate has been a dance teacher and choreographer for over 20 years in NY and NC. She continues to develop her education and training by taking master classes with the industries top dancers, choreographers and business leaders. Kate also has extensive training for and has worked with special needs individuals for over 17 years. In 2017 Kate founded the ground breaking non profit Beats Dance Inc. for dancers with special needs.

Miss Kate is also a member of the National Dance Education Organization. In 2019 MDA became the first to host an East Coast teacher training program for SugarFoot Therapy. Miss Kate is now certified through SugarFoot Therapy and utilizes their techniques for proper stretching to keep our dancers safe and able to have longer careers! In April of 2021 Miss Kate was 1 of 50 people in the world chosen for Broadway Dance Center’s Inaugural Choreography Program. She trained with some of the best and most in demand choreographers of Broadway, tv/movies and music videos. She is a BDC Alumni and holds a certificate in Choreography. Miss Kate is also certified in the follow;

  • Rhythm Works Integrative Dance Certified Teacher
  • Acrobatic Arts Module 1 Certified Teacher
  • Acrobatic Arts Preschool Certified Teacher
  • CLI Studios – Certified teacher and Certified Studio

The academy also boasts two guest teachers, Paul Mockovak and Danisha Bailey. Mockovak is a professor at the Musical Theatre Professor at SUNY Fredonia’s Dept of Theatre and Dance.

Inside the Academy

Classes at the Martelle Dance Academy range from toddlers to teenagers and beyond. Kate offers “Wiggles and Giggles” for children 2-4 years old, “Mini-movers” for the 4-6 age group, and “Jammin Juniors” teaches the 7-10 year old crew. “Rising Stars” class focuses on the 11-15 year age group and “Shooting Stars” is for dancers age 15 and up.
